So I bought a van!
by Bill Lowdell · 4th November 2021
So after getting caught short with a rubbish tent in Snowdonia and some very wet weather back in August, I had to take to sleeping in my tiny Citroen C1! This actually turned out to be surprisingly comfy given the circumstances and sowed the seeds for what was to come.
So jump forward a couple of months and while staying in my beloved Scottish Highland retreat (my bro’s place!) in September I bought his old work van and drove it 640 miles back to Kent.
So meet ‘Ivan the Credible‘! (See what I did there?! ) … He’s a 2003 Fiat Doblo and I bought him with the sole purpose of being able to camp and get away at the drop of a hat.
And also to put a different slant on it, he’s also going to be a mobile recording studio for myself, to make music on the road … Whilst being completely solar-powered and self-sufficient!
More about the tech side of this in another post and music to follow.
He may even be a mobile office for my fostering panel work but I’m working on this one!
With the help of my old friend Gordon and some inspiration and research on the internet, he now has a great sleep platform with storage underneath for my leisure battery and gas canister. He also has a cooker. It’s all modular so can be taken down moved about / hidden and he can actually be turned back into a normal van with back seats if needed for transportation of the grandkids!
So far I have done 3 nights on a campsite and one wild camp on the beach in Sussex … It’s so liberating and I’m looking forward to new adventures to come.
At 57, everyone thinks I’m bonkers … but that said … they should know me by now!!
So in the immortal words of my new heroes, Craig & Aimee from Kinging It ‘Rule your Own World’.
